A Focused Studio with a Global Footprint.

M.V.D.M Architects is a boutique architecture studio led by Marielise van der Merwe, working across:

  • Private homes and holiday retreats
  • Multi-residential and lifestyle developments
  • Hospitality, wellness and community spaces

The studio operates from three bases, Plettenberg Bay, Pretoria, and Sydney, while keeping the practice intentionally small. For each project, Marielise assembles a bespoke team of trusted collaborators: engineers, landscape designers, interior specialists and artists who share her commitment to integrity, simplicity and human-centred design.

The result is work that feels both deeply local and quietly global — drawing on influences from the Karoo to the busy streets of New York, while remaining grounded in the everyday lives of the people who inhabit each space.

Marielise van der Merwe
Architect, listener, lifelong observer.

Marielise grew up with architecture in her blood: site meetings with her father, art and interior shows with her mother, and sketchbooks filled with roofs, walls and light. Architecture never felt like a career choice; it was simply the language she was born speaking.

Her work is guided by three simple values: purpose, empathy and clarity. In practice, that means:

  • We believe in meaningful design which has contextual relevance and long-term utility.
  • Designing with empathy for how people actually live and believe.
  • Creating spaces that are intuitive, functional, and uncluttered. It provides a sense of calm and structure, making it easier for users to interact with their environment.

Going beyond expectation so that each project quietly improves quality of life, even on a subconscious level.

Clients describe working with her as calm, thorough, and unexpectedly life-changing: a process where they feel seen, respected and gently guided towards outcomes richer than they first imagined.

Every M.V.D.M project begins with a simple question: How should this place make you feel?

From there, a few enduring principles shape the work:

  • The classic Vitruvian principles requires that a building is functional, durable and beautiful. At MvdM Architects we believe that a building should also inspire a sense of awe, wonder and surprise.
  • Sustainability built into the plan
    Sustainability is not a slogan; it is a comprehensive design philosophy aimed at minimizing a building’s negative environmental impact while enhancing the social and economic well-being of its occupants and local community.
  • Spaces that quietly do more
    Integrity with reference to honesty in material use, ethical consistency and structural and professional accountability Architecture must uplift lives and circumstances — not only in obvious ways, but in the small, subconscious moments: where you pause, what you see when you wake, the view that greets you after a long day.

We start with a deep conversation about your life, site, budget and non-negotiables. This is where we listen more than we speak.
Step 2

Concept & Narrative

We develop a clear design concept and story for the project — how it sits in its context, how you move through it, how light and views are choreographed.
Step 3

Design Development

The concept becomes detailed plans, sections and elevations. Materials, structure and services are resolved with engineers and specialist consultants where required.
Step 4

Documentation & Approvals
